The new Kendrick Brothers film OVERCOMER debuts in theaters nationwide today (8/23/2019). Alex and Stephen’s sixth motion picture is their most accomplished to date. WAR ROOM (their previous movie) was #1 at the box office in September of 2015.
The plot involves a high school coach (Alex Kendrick) who is within reach of his life-long goal of a state-championship basketball team. But suddenly a contingency arises that takes him down a much different path.
A 15 year old girl (new comer: Aryn Wright-Thompson) is the only person interested in running cross-country for Brookshire high school, and she has an acute case of asthma. As she trains and is mentored, the main themes of the film emerge: identity in Christ, unity, repentance/reconciliation and family/marriage dynamics. Hannah has very little self-worth until she is encouraged by her school principal (Priscilla Shirer) to study Ephesians 1 and 2.
Coach Harrison’s identity is defined by his career. When that is stripped away, who is he?
There is an exciting edge-of-your-seat race that will have you cheering for Hannah Scott, and a 3rd act that has not just one but two big surprises that you won’t see coming.
Is OVERCOMER better than the #1 film WAR ROOM? Yes, it is.
The new Kendrick feature will make you laugh and make you cry, but more importantly it will help you to think with an eternal perspective.
Please encourage everyone you know to attend this well-made and inspirational motion picture.
You will leave the movie theater feeling blessed and uplifted.
TRIVIA:
Record Budget – The budget for OVERCOMER was $5 million. This was far more than that of their three previous movies: War Room ($3 million), Courageous ($2 million) and Fireproof ($500,000). The bigger budget translates to the big screen with drone shots – the opening drone-shot scene of a basketball game is spectacular – and special effects. The Kendricks also used better cameras – the same cameras and lenses they used to film Avengers. And for the first time, the Kendricks had their own sets built, too.
Family Affair – Not only are the themes of family prevalent in the movie, but the production was full of family too. Writer/Director Alex Kendrick’s two sons were part of the experience. His oldest son, Joshua, worked with the camera crew and his youngest son, Caleb, plays his son in the movie. Brother Stephen Kendrick has cameos throughout the film.
Gospel – get ready to hear the gospel. OVERCOMER doesn’t shy away from proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. We won’t give away any spoilers, but be prepared to be impressed with how many times characters in the movie talk about finding faith in the Lord and sharing it with others.
